How is David Beckham currently received in the United Kingdom?

After transferring from Manchester United to Real Madrid, and then to LA Galaxy, is he still just as popular and well-respected as when he played for a UK club? Is he still considered a national hero, or is he looked on as some kind of turncoat?

I’m doing a project for an advertising class and our group is throwing around the idea of using Beckham as a spokesperson for a hypothetica product aimed at British men aged 18-44. Would this be a wise idea, or would using David Beckham to promote our “product” do more harm than good?
