5 Ways To Improve Your Soccer Skills
Posted on December 25th, 2009 No commentsOn my blog at www.soccercoachingblog.com I have been asked many times by players of all ages and abilities. “How Can I Improve My Soccer Skills?” Well, the old saying still applies, “Practice Makes Perfect.” The great thing about soccer is that you don’t need any expensive equipment or a coach or teammates to help you get better. All you need is a ball, a wall and a small area to work in. Here are 5 Ways to Improve Your Soccer Skills:
1 TOUCH. Juggle with the ball. Aim for 1000 touches on the ball each day. You learn to juggle in 3 stages, 1-3 juggles, 3-10 juggles, 10+ juggles. To help you get started, you can use your hands and you can let the ball bounce as well, all you are aiming for is lots of touches on the ball. The hardest stage is 3-10 touches, this seems to cause beginners the most frustration, but stick with it. Once you can consistently juggle the ball 10 times, you are off to the races and 10-20 gets easier, the 50, then 100 and beyond.
2. PASS and/or SHOOT against a WALL. Find a wall and pass and shoot against it and control the rebound. This may sound simple and basic, but it is no different to going to the driving range to practice your golf shot or using one of those machines at tennis that serve balls to you. You can work on passing, shooting and controlling the ball and start with controlling the ball first and then passing or shooting and then build up to first time passes and shots.
3. TURNS. Practice all six turns, INSIDE HOOK, OUTSIDE HOOK, DRAG BACK, STEPOVER, CRUYFF and STOP TURN. Master each turn at game like speed and then do combinations of turns e.g. inside hook, take a touch into space and then do a stop turn. Keep working on this until you can do routines involving all 6 turns one after another.
4. MOVES/DRIBBLES. There are so many fancy moves, some named after stars e.g. Stanley Matthews, Maradona, Scissors, Touch Touch etc. You don’t need to know how to do all of them. Just perfect two moves that you can do with both feet and that you can both take on the defender on their inside and outside. When I say perfect them, you need to be able to do these at game like speed without looking at the ball and be able to produce an end product, either a shot or a pass.
5. CONTROL. Find some open space and kick the ball up in the air. As it comes down work on controlling it with your feet, thighs, chest and head. Once you get the hang of controlling the ball, then add a turn or a move or a shot or pass against the wall.

The best time to improve soccer skills
Posted on December 25th, 2009 No commentsThe best time to improve soccer skills
The season is over and summer is almost upon us. It’s break time for players, coaches and also for parents. No hectic schedule for midweek practices and weekend games. No worrying about winning the championship or even winning the next game. Everything is on hold until next season.
Breaks are important in that they give us much needed time to relax and rest our bodies and minds. It’s also time for reflection on the right and wrong of what transpired during the season and how we can improve. We have time to take assessment of our own personal role in the team’s performance. How can we make ourselves more valuable to our team next season? From a coaching standpoint we can learn new training methods, observe how successful teams achieved their success, and encourage our players to continue to improve their individual skill levels during the off season. You might also work on our own ball skills so you can be a better demonstrator of skills to your players. Players respect the coaches’ skills very much and will try to imitate to earn praise.
Actually the off season is the best time to develop individual ball skills. During the season the most important thing on the team’s mind is usually winning the championship, whatever it takes to win. Team tactics usually take priority in training sessions with some time given to technique and conditioning at each practice. During the stress of making the starting lineup and performing under pressure is not the best time to improve your individual skills. The best time to improve your individual technique is when your mind is relaxed and fresh and you can focus on improving your skills. Knowing your strengths and weaknesses is the starting point. Always try to improve your strengths but pay special attention to your weaknesses such as improving your weak foot and areas that always need improving such as running with the ball keeping your head up, playing on your toes, improving touch on the ball and keeping it close to your body as you dribble and of course your quickness, strength and speed. These are things you can do at home or in your own back yard.
Practicing in the offseason can be fun especially when you see improvement. Improving individual skills is a great way to build self-esteem and self-confidence not only in soccer but in life in general. As you build your individual skills you raise the bar for other players on your team to reach and in doing so help make your team better. You will be surprised in how quickly you will improve once you make a personal commitment and spend some time every day to work on your skills. Remember once you master the skills they are yours for life. Of course you can always refine them but they will be with you forever and dramatically raise the satisfaction you get from playing this beautiful game

3 Best Ways To Improve Soccer Skills Individually
Posted on December 20th, 2009 No commentsIf you’re looking for ways to improve soccer skills individually, you’ve come to the right place. I know that soccer team practice sometimes just isn’t enough if you want to become great. Just take a look at most of the great soccer players in activity. They always say that they spend a lot of hours off-pitch improving their soccer skills, which makes them so good in matches. But simply training after hours isn’t enough, you need to train intelligently, after a rigorous program.
-Best Ways to Improve Soccer Skills – DVD Programs
There’s a lot of these babies around the Internet these days, so if you’re planning on buying a DVD program for individual soccer practice, make sure it’s a serious author that created it and it’s not some lame compilation of soccer highlights with subtitles saying “Do this and you’ll be great”.
A quality DVD program is a great way to improve soccer skills, because it allows a certain level of interactivity to your learning. It’s not like learning from a TV show, because with DVD’s you can go straight to the chapter that interests you, you can go back and review stuff over and over again until you get the picture.
-Best Ways to Improve Soccer Skills – Skill Focusing
If you notice that there’s a certain area in your game that isn’t on par with your other skills, focus on it to get it on level terms. Having an unbalanced skill set is extremely damaging to your game. For example, you could be very fast and strong, but if you don’t have good ball control, you won’t be able to use your physical skills for anything.
Same goes with players that are extremely technical but very weak on their feet, so improving your soccer skills in a balanced way is best. Also, you could focus on your best skill not your worst one. Are you a good long range shooter? Make that your trademark. Practice long shots over and over again and your teammates will soon know that they need to create space for your shots and you’ll be able to score more often. You could also make a trademark of your heading, your passing, your set pieces and so forth.
-Best Ways to Improve Soccer Skills – Variation
Never allow a particular exercise or drill become boring routine, or you risk entering a stalemate with your soccer skills. Whatever you’re practicing, go for alternative techniques. For example, if you’re practicing dribbling, don’t just focus on a single type of dribble, effective as it may be. You will need to have a varied repertoire of dribbles if you want to stand up to your different adversaries.
In conclusion, you will probably want to combine these three methods, not just use them separately. Use a DVD program to cover the theoretical aspects of your practice and use the other two as practical methods of getting your skills up. You should be gaining an edge in no time!
