UNICEF: Ambassador David Beckham visits Sierra Leone
Posted on April 11th, 2011 25 comments
BOMBALI DISTRICT, Sierra Leone, 22 January 2008 — Football star and UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador David Beckham recently completed a visit to Sierra Leone, where he travelled with UNICEF representatives to focus attention on the issue of child survival. The trip took place during the lead-up to the release of UNICEF’s yearly flagship report — ‘The State of the World’s Children 2008′. This year’s report cites Sierra Leone as having the highest rate of infant mortality in the world. “In Sierra Leone, one in four children dies before reaching their fifth birthday,” Mr. Beckham said. “It’s shocking and tragic, especially when the solutions are simple. Saving these children’s lives is a top priority for UNICEF — and as an Ambassador, I hope I can help to draw attention to this issue across the world.” To read the full story, visit: www.unicef.org25 responses to “UNICEF: Ambassador David Beckham visits Sierra Leone”

@johnis64 2000! I was adopted from Sierra Leone in 1994 when I was 13 months old. I am hopefully planning on going back when I am 18. I heard things are better there now.

I don’t understand celebrities why cant they donate millions to the poor? Why is it so hard to give 250,000 but not to buy their exotic lavish cars or 3 thousand dollar purses. if their famous for their talent nobody gives a rats ass what they wear.

western countries are the cause of the devestating war cuz of the interest they have and trying to act like they don’t know anything about . they even say it’s unnecesary war and blame it on african gov’t to devide from the ppl. they go to afric and take pics with some poor ppl and try to look nice and helpfull. i wish someting comes and destroyed this western monsters and africa can star to live peacefully. they beg at the name of africa and take the money to their own uses. westerns are liar!!

We adopted 3 of our children from Sierra Leone in 2000. They were 4 and 5 at the time. All we want is for people to hear about this forgotten country. Sierra Leone blessed us with our chldren and in turn we adopted their country. It is so tragic and heart breaking but any attention the people get gives them hope that someone cares. Bless you Mr. Beckham!

God bless you David. I also send my special thanks to Angelina Jolie and Micheal Douglas. Only God will reward people like you for your profound kindness. Please continue to help. Our leaders are crooks and they are the most dishonest people in the whole planet. Some of the wasted ones from abroad find the country a place to go and reap what is left of the poor country. SHAME ON THEM. jazzy.

Beckhams a nice guy who actually cares he hasnt done this for publicity because in England or we hear about Beckham is gossip and football news because thats how narrow minded the editors of gossip magazines and their readers are. The real Beckham is a good guy and dad. Btw at the end they took the spot kick illegally you have to pass it to the other forward before you can pass it back lol.

I wish more famous people went there and saw that there are some poor people in the world. I think that Beckham deservs our respect for doing something with it. He’s not blind and he helps by encouraging others take care about Africans. That’s a very good thing!
