  • What is the fascination with David Beckham?

    I see the media are cooling off a bit since David Beckham moved to LA Galaxy. I never could quite understand the media frenzy anyway. I mean he’s good but isn’t what I would describe as a truly great player anyway.

    Who would you say is the greatest footballer currently playing?
    Secret Keeper – You’ve changed your name haven’t you? Ryan Giggs is still playing for THEM!! (sorry can’t bring myself to use foul language) – Redknapp and Shearer are both retired and are currently pundits Redknapp for Sky Sports and Shearer for the BBC. I wouldn’t say they were ‘greats’ either, not in the same way as Pele, Cruyff, Maradonna or Zidane anyway. So who in todays game is going to go down in history like them?
    Adam h – he always was a bit lame in my opinion.
    Dolia – I think you have a point, but I think he’s got famous off the back of his wife’s fame. If he hadn’t married a Spice Girl then I think he’d have just remained an ordinary player for an ordinary club.

    • soccer is not a popular game in u.s but it’s the world most popular game so he is world famous.

    • Right now he is the greatest player on the disabled list.

    • Theiry Henry is the best.

      Beckham is basically the michael jordan of soccer. he may not be the best in the sport anymore, but he is still the most popular player.

    • His wifey’s rounded firm boobs and other cosmetic surgeries. David Beckham should be himself and do what he really loves instead of being dragged round the world by his wife, Tom Cruise and what’s his wife name.

    • I don’t think they think of Beckham as a player.He’s a brand.

    • it’s just an english think just because he was slightly better than your average football player , lol we don’t get to many great football players in england, germany are the same with micheal ballack and brazil are the same with kaka ( sorry i don’t know his first name ) i personnely think that the best football player is either kaka or c ronaldo but it is most likley to be kaka

    • Beckham was all hype to get Americans interested in watching MLS.
      Problem is he is injured and past his prime.
      So who really cares.
      I don’t know any other footballers. I’d rather watch paint dry.

      I only think hes gorgeous, and I wouldnt mind getting apiece of his millions other than that, i have never seen him play. Football wise I gotta go with brett favre. what can I say i live in wisconsin!!!!

    • i agree. Beckham in vastly overrated but he has had very good marketing which is down to his wife, any Marketing company that can make this woman a star can work miracles.
      as for the greatest player at the moment. C Ronaldo as a very good chance to become a great but he will have to substain his current form to get near my hero, Eric Cantona.

      Because he can bend it like no one else can also he was a great player in England and now he is in America

    • He’s good player that can cross the ball really well and help his teammates score and the best footballer is Ronaldinho.

    • love him or hate me(well i love him,as a due of respect that is)he is the most iconic footballer in the world.those ronaldinhos,kakas and ronaldos are well known in the football world,i repeat,football world.but trying asking people who dont know anything about football,chances that people wil know about beckham is more than they will know about kaka,ronaldinho,ronaldo. well,in my opinion,he is,truely,a great footballer,not the greatest thou,he is not someone who will rely on pace,so age is definitely not something that will stop him. and look at his freekicks,can anyone match up to his? i can only think of nakamura and juninho,those 2 are the only 2 that are close to beckham in terms of free kicks ability. if i am to say the greatest footballer,i would say it is steven gerrard,just look at his contribution to liverpool,he is no kaka nor ronaldo,but he keep it simple,and produce always wif his trademark runs

    • Media is cooling off since he isnt playing. wait till he playes and we will hear about him once again. Even now , you will find news about him going to yankees game and so on. ESPN signed a deal with MLS for 3M to bradcast teh games. They will make their money even if they have to talk abuot David 24/7

    • He was NEVER an ordinary player for an ordinary club. He was world-famous (except in the U.S.) years ago. We are, as usual, years behind the world. He is likely to be much better remembered in fifteen years than his wife.

      Forget anything based on U.S. media. They are hopelessly stuck on the idea of getting on to the next story rather than of letting things develop and reporting on that. They are a product of what I call Generation MTV, the “Give it to me NOW and you are already too late” generation. Their attention span is possible ten times that of a goldfish, which is alleged to be three seconds. At that, they pay attention longer than most of my fellow Americans.

      As for the best player in the world, I have no idea because there is not enough coverage in this area to form an opinion.
