  • How is David Beckham currently received in the United Kingdom?

Posted on May 10th, 2010 admin 6 comments

After transferring from Manchester United to Real Madrid, and then to LA Galaxy, is he still just as popular and well-respected as when he played for a UK club? Is he still considered a national hero, or is he looked on as some kind of turncoat?

I’m doing a project for an advertising class and our group is throwing around the idea of using Beckham as a spokesperson for a hypothetica product aimed at British men aged 18-44. Would this be a wise idea, or would using David Beckham to promote our “product” do more harm than good?

    • Outside of Manchester he is seen as an overpaid clown. So unless your aiming for a very limited market not a great idea.

    • David Beckham was once a great footballer. Now he is a clothes horse under the control of his wife and if he opens his mouth he is exposed as not the sharpest knife in the drawer. British men no longer aspire to be like him and young boys have other heroes now. I don’t think his image would do your hypothetical product any good at all.

No one really cares anymore, if you don’t live in manchester, david beckhams a douche and his wifes just the same. America relived us of thier burden. :)

    • The assumption that David Beckham is some form of role model in Britian is wrong.

In Scotland and Wales he is a complete non-entity. Indeed the one certain way to get Scots to ignore a product is to promote it using an English footballer.

    • beckham was never a great player
